Once a renowned documentary director, Dennis Jackson (Simon Callow) is now reduced to making low-budget public information films for children. The latest – Terror on the Tracks – warns against the danger of playing on the railways, and is being filmed on an isolated branch line up in the Pennines.
A bad start to the production gets even worse when the film’s child star disappears. The crew find the boy, but he’s injured, shaken, scared… what has he seen? Dennis learns from the lonely signalman (Ralph Ineson), who presides over this stretch of track, that there are far greater terrors here: unsettling sights and sounds, which seem to foreshadow accidents on the line…
